Deriv drives inclusive education in Rwanda

Deriv believes that real, lasting change begins with actionable investment in inclusive education. We partnered with Rwanda We Want, a non-profit dedicated to youth empowerment and supporting sustainable development, to address educational inequality for children with intellectual disabilities. Rwanda We Want has signed an agreement with Tubiteho School in Kigali to help identify and organise fundraising opportunities, as the school does not have the capacity to manage this on its own. Our partnership aims to support students with Down syndrome, autism, and other neurodevelopmental challenges.
Empowering Rwandan youth through community investment - June 2025
Sixteen Deriv volunteers took part in the first of four initiatives at Tubiteho School, which serves students aged 5–18+, with Down syndrome, autism, or other neurodevelopmental challenges. Historically underserved, the school lacked resources to support its unique teaching methods, such as multi-sensory and play-based learning. The introductory unboxing event, attended by students, parents, and staff, distributed specially designed numeracy kits and creative learning aids.
Supporting inclusive education at Tubiteho school in Kigali

The day began with a guided tour of the Tubiteho school. Volunteers were given a firsthand look at the school’s story, its role in the community, and innovative hands-on ways teachers connect with students – learning through touch, sound, and even play. Deriv’s team observed classroom sessions where teachers demonstrated how newly provided resources help students develop practical skills and boost confidence in their abilities.
Then, Deriv volunteers jumped into action, engaging with students to support their academic and social growth. They worked alongside students during math exercises, clapped rhythms in music sessions that encouraged self-expression, and joined teamwork-focused group games. While the focus was on learning, the highlight was undeniably the energy in the room: laughter, high-fives, and proud smiles as students tackled challenges head-on.

Building inclusive play spaces - July 2025
The Deriv team returned to revitalise Tubiteho’s playground, painting swings and fences, planting grass for a football pitch, and creating sensory play zones. These improvements are a small yet significant step towards building inclusive school environments where every child can thrive.

Deriv’s involvement extends far beyond providing resources, it’s about rolling up our sleeves, building relationships that last. By focusing on education, inclusion, and sustainable impact, we’re bringing our empowering communities pillar to life in the places we call home. Recent initiatives, including the donation of laptops in three of our local office communities, further reflect our commitment to bridging gaps and opening doors for overlooked communities.
We’re proud to support the important work of Rwanda We Want and Tubiteho School, and remain dedicated to making a real difference in communities around the world.
