Executing Mean Reversion Strategies on MT5
This lesson walks through how to put Moving Averages and Bollinger Bands to work directly on the platform, sharpening the way you approach trading Volatility Indices with these tools.
Welcome back to our Deriv MT5 course! This lesson walks through how to put Moving Averages and Bollinger Bands to work directly on the platform, sharpening the way you approach trading Volatility Indices with these tools.
A Word on Timeframes
Before setting anything up, it's worth understanding how timeframe shapes the way an indicator behaves:
Longer timeframes smooth out shorter-term noise by aggregating more data, making broader trends easier to spot.
Shorter timeframes react faster to price changes, letting you catch immediate movement — but at the cost of more noise and volatility in the signal itself.
Pick whichever timeframe fits your own trading style and goals.
Setting Up the 5/20 Moving Average Crossover Strategy
Configuring the Indicators
Here's how to get your Moving Averages set up for a mean reversion approach:
- Open Deriv MT5 and load the Volatility 50 Index chart.
- Click the "Add Indicator" icon in the toolbar, select "Trend," then "Moving Average."
- Set up two Moving Averages with these parameters:
First MA:
- Period: 5
- Method: Simple
- Apply to: Close
Second MA:
- Period: 20
- Method: Simple
- Apply to: Close
Reading the Signals
Buy signal: Triggered when the 5-day SMA crosses above the 20-day SMA, pointing to potential upward momentum.
Sell signal: Triggered when the 5-day SMA crosses below the 20-day SMA, pointing to potential downward movement.
Worked example — short position: Wait for the 5-day SMA to cross below the 20-day SMA near $274. Enter the trade, and place your stop-loss just above the 20-day SMA, around $275. Take profit when the 5-day SMA crosses back above the 20-day SMA, roughly around $270.
Worked example — long position: Wait for the 5-day SMA to cross above the 20-day SMA. Enter the trade, placing your stop-loss just below the 20-day SMA based on your own risk preference. Take profit when the 5-day SMA crosses back below the 20-day SMA.
Setting Up the Bollinger Bands Strategy
Configuring Bollinger Bands
Now let's layer in Bollinger Bands to round out the strategy:
- Open a fresh Volatility 50 Index chart, or clear the indicators from your current one.
- Click "Indicators," choose "Trend," then select "Bollinger Bands."
- Set the parameters as follows:
- Period: 20
- Deviations: 2
- Shift: 0
- Apply to: Close
- Colour: Pick something that stands out clearly on your chart
Spotting Trading Opportunities
Scenario 1 — long position: If price sits around $282, near the lower Bollinger Band, that's worth considering as a long entry. Set your take-profit at the 20-day SMA (around $283.50) or the upper band (around $285), with a stop-loss just below the lower band (around $281).
Scenario 2 — short position: If price is touching the upper Bollinger Band and the bands are squeezing together, that's worth considering as a short entry. Set your take-profit at the SMA or the lower band, with a stop-loss just above the upper band.
Once you're in a position, keep an eye on price and adjust your stop-loss and take-profit as the trade develops.
A Few Extra Things to Keep in Mind
Practising and refining these strategies on a demo account is a smart way to build confidence before moving into live trading. Also factor in spreads and other trading costs — they genuinely affect your bottom line, whether you're winning or losing on a given trade.
If you want to tighten up your process further, consider setting alerts for specific indicator signals, or automating your strategy through an Expert Advisor on MT5. Either can help keep your trading consistent and cut down on avoidable errors.
