How to compete

Your task is to tackle one of our challenging problems by building a live, working prototype for one of the following fields using AI. The exact challenges will be revealed during pre-hackathon briefing on 5 February.

Application

Participation requires teams of 3 to 4 members. Once you submit the registration form successfully, we'll send you a confirmation email. Register before 30 January 2025!

Pre-hack briefing (5 February, Zoom)

Join a virtual briefing on 5 February to meet the organisers, understand the challenges, and get tips for hacking success. You’ll also have the chance to ask any questions you have.

Building your prototype 
(8 Feb to 9 Feb)

Build your app using AI. With guidance from our mentors, work with your team to turn your innovative ideas into reality.

Demo & award ceremony (9 Feb)

Once the projects are submitted, each team will have 5 minutes to pitch their solutions to a panel of expert judges. The hackathon will conclude with an award ceremony, where the top teams will be awarded RM 15,000, RM 10,000, and RM 5,000 cash prizes.

FAQs

1. How do I apply to participate?

Simply click the "Join the challenge" button, complete the application form, and introduce your team. Only shortlisted teams will be invited to join the competition. We can’t wait to see what you’ll bring to the table.

2. Do I need to have a team to participate?

Yes, a team is required to join this hackathon. Your team should consist of 3 to 4 members, including at least one coder with AI expertise.

3. I’m not a coder. Can I still join?

Absolutely! While your team must have a coder with AI expertise, other skills (design, project management, research, etc.) are just as crucial.

4. Is the event open to non-Malaysians?

Yes, as long as you are currently residing in Malaysia with a valid PR, work, or student visa.

5. Is the event open to Deriv employees?

Yes, Deriv employees are welcome to join the challenge. We have a special category for Deriv employee teams.

6. Do participants need to come to Cyberjaya on the hackathon day? 

Yes, if they are shortlisted to compete, all participants must attend the hackathon in person at the venue (Deriv HQ, Cyberjaya) on 8–9 February 2025.

7. What if I need to rest during the hackathon?

No worries! You’re welcome to stay overnight at Deriv HQ and we will provide a safe space to rest. You can take power naps in between coding. Please bring your own sleeping bags, pillows, toiletries, etc.

8. Is food provided during the event?

Yes. We’ll offer full meals, a variety of snacks, and beverages throughout the event to keep you energised and focused as you work on your projects.

9. What do we need to hack?  

You’ll be developing an AI application for one of the six challenges listed on this webpage. A working prototype is required for the final demo.

10. Is there a registration fee?

No, it’s free to participate. All you need to do is apply to join, wait for the shortlist confirmation, and bring your enthusiasm… and laptops!

11. How long is the hackathon?  

The event begins at 9:00 am on 8 February and will conclude by 6:00 pm on 9 February with the final demos and award ceremony.

12. What are the judging criteria?  

Judges will look for innovation, practicality, functionality, and design. Your team’s technical ability and presentation will also play a role in the evaluation.

13. How do we present our work?

Your team will demo the prototype live in front of judges at the venue. Submission details will be made clear during the event.
